Babies are safest when they sleep by themselves, on their backs, and in a crib or bassinet. Unfortunately, many New York City families are unaware of safe sleeping techniques or are unable to afford the gear to provide the safest sleeping environment for their infants.
To raise awareness of safe sleeping and to provide critically needed equipment, Baby Buggy has implemented Project Safe Sleep - a campaign to supply cribs for New York City's newborns in need. Many of the families we serve frequently relocate or do not have enough space in their homes for a full size crib. In order to best accommodate their needs and ensure safe sleeping of their babies, Baby Buggy distributes portable cribs and full-size cribs. We reached our goal by providing over 3,000 safe sleeping places in phase I of this initiative, also known as the Crib Drive. Currently, in phase II, we are working to expand our crib distribution to our City's disadvantaged neighborhoods, including East Harlem and South Bronx. By working through these city hospitals, pre-natal programs, and our social service network, we will distribute the cribs to the families that need them.

When infants have their own area to sleep in, it eliminates the potential of an infant being smothered or rolled over upon and possibly suffocated. Having a separate place to sleep also greatly reduces the incident of SIDS"

*Due to the space constraints of many of our families homes, families receive either a smaller wooden portable crib or a full-size crib. A portable crib costs $80 and the full-size crib costs $115. With a $100 donation, families will receive the safe sleeping space that best fits their needs.
